Anniversary of Assad’s overthrow: Speaking at a mosque, President al-Sharaa called for reconciliation and unity

In Syria, December 8 is celebrated as Liberation Day, the first anniversary of the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime. The new head of state, Ahmad al-Sharaa, began the day with a visit to the Umayyad mosque in Damascus, where he arrived a year ago after his triumphal entry into the capital.

After the prayer ended, the president addressed the congregation, saying that his government was committed to national reconciliation, reconstruction of the country after the war and the restoration of institutions of government throughout Syria.

He also recalled the heroism of the fighters who entered Damascus a year ago and stated the need to preserve the achievements of victory. Calling for national unity, he stated the need to create institutions of new power throughout Syria.

Note that a year after the militants of the Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham, led by al-Sharaa, overthrew Assad, entire groups of the population still do not recognize the new government. These are Kurds, Druze, as well as Alawites – the religious sect to which Assad and his inner circle belonged. Christians also have significant concerns.
