The prices of children’s hobbies are on the verge of pain – most of them cost a hundred a month

Families with children the price of hobby costs has increased by 16 percent since the time before the corona pandemic. The matter is clear from a survey conducted by the insurance company Lähitapiola.

Currently, the total amount spent on hobbies each month is 97 euros, while in 2019 it was 83 euros.

“Many families seem to have had to cut back on their children’s hobbies in recent years for cost reasons”, states in the announcement Lähitapiola Henkihtiö’s CEO Pasi Haarala.

“The proportion of children who cannot participate in normal social activities without subsidized hobbies or free hobby groups has increased.”

According to the company, the increase in the costs of sports hobbies, especially racing, is steeper than the results of the survey might suggest.

A survey according to 55 percent of families with children spend no more than 100 euros per month on their children’s hobbies. Among them, the largest slice costs 26–50 euros.

About a third of the respondents spend 100–300 euros per month. Likewise, six percent report that they don’t spend a cent on hobbies.

Lähitapiola also asked about expenses in 2019.

“At that time, one hundred euros was also considered a monthly pain, which the costs of the hobby should not exceed in the economy,” says Haarala.

214 families with children responded to the survey in September. The margin of error is about three percentage points.
