The conflict escalated today when the Thai Navy announced an operation to clear out Cambodian forces in Trat province. The Thai military reported that Cambodia had used rocket launchers, bomber drones and artillery, and that shells had hit civilian homes in Sa Khao province. Cambodia has accused Thailand of firing on civilian areas, destroying infrastructure and damaging temples and cultural properties. The fighting led to the mass displacement of residents from both sides of the border. The Thai military reported that over 125,000 people are staying in shelters in Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin and Buri Ram provinces.

In Cambodia, more than 21,000 people were evacuated in the provinces of Phra Vihar, Udar Minchei and Banteay Minchei. The current tensions follow a five-day conflict in July, in which at least 48 people were killed and 300,000 were displaced from their homes, before Trump brokered a ceasefire. Last month, Thailand announced the suspension of the agreement, claiming that Cambodia had placed new mines along the 800-kilometer shared border.
