TopGear has announced its TopGear.com Awards for 2026 and announced the “best of the best” of the past year. The list includes everything from ultra-expensive hypercars to cute little electric city cars. There are also unexpected winners, like Dacia, who proudly admits that her car is a “cube on four wheels”. Below, we present the most interesting winners selected by TopGear as cars of the year.
BMW iX3 (Neue Klasse) – The first BMW from the new electric “Neue Klasse” generation and at the same time the big TopGear winner, car of the year. It is praised because it looks normal, drives like a real BMW, has a calm, nicely decorated cabin and brand new electric technology that will be used on future BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce models.

Bugatti Tourbillon – An award-winning successor to the Chiron, it offers much more than a “straight line car”. TopGear writes that Tourbillon knows perfectly what its customers want: an incredible driving feeling, an interior like a high-class wristwatch and extreme exclusivity.

Aston Martin DBX S – A sports SUV that got more serious “teeth” in this S version, but remained practical and capable of everyday life. It’s described as brutal, loud and incredibly fast, but refined enough that you can really use it as a family car.

Yangwang (BYD) – Chinese electric sports car that has already broken the record at the Nürburgring and aims for speeds over 500 km/h. TopGear says that “the world is on notice” because BYD’s premium brand is no longer only chasing Tesla, but also Bugatti.

Ford Mustang GTD – A wild Mustang built to drive laps around the track and roar with an ear-piercing V8 sound. TopGear describes it as the loud answer to all silent electric cars, a car that physically shakes the air around it every time you hit the gas.

Kimera EVO37 – A modern reinterpretation of the legendary Lancia 037 that won TopGear with its lightness, energy and feeling on the steering wheel. They especially emphasize that despite its “crazy” character, it has remained reliable, so they joke that “it’s not a Lancia like it used to be anymore” in the bad sense.

Renault Group – The award did not go to one model, but to the entire Renault Group for a series of new “retro but modern” projects. TopGear writes that in serious times, Renault offers brighter, more colorful cars that literally “attack the gray” on the roads.

Ferrari F80 – The new extreme hypercar from Maranello which, according to TopGear, looks even crazier in reality than in the pictures. It is praised for its superior engineering, but also for the fact that it is not just about numbers, but offers an emotional driving experience for ultra-rich customers.

Hyundai Inster – A small, slightly strange electric car that won over the jury with its cleverly arranged cabin and surprisingly good range. TopGear says it’s a “grown-up small car” – seriously thought out, but still with a touch of character and fun.

Kia PV5 – Electric “van” and lifestyle vehicle that they called a joy to drive, with a seating position like a captain’s chair. In the text, they compare it to the VW ID Buzz for that “feel good” factor, but they emphasize that Kia hit the right mix of comfort and practicality.

Ferrari 296 Speciale – The evolution of Ferrari’s hybrid supercar, which, according to TopGear, again raises the bar for driving characteristics. They describe it as a perfect mix of “analog and digital” – brutal mechanics and modern electronics that keep everything under control.

Land Rover Defender Octa – Off-road beast with a V8 engine of over 600 hp that TopGear simply describes as a Defender that “likes to fly through the air”. It’s a crazy off-road version of the cult model, for those who find the regular Defender neither fast enough nor extreme enough.

Audi A6 Avant – The wagon that TopGear uses as an argument that wagons are still “cool” and better than SUVs. The new A6 Avant is huge, practical, quiet on the highway and very elegant at the same time, so it was named the most impressive new station wagon of the year.

Renault 4 – The electric reincarnation of the legendary Renault 4 showed that “retro” can turn out very well. The car brings a modern EV drive, but with a lot of character and charm, as a kind of antidote to “white electric household appliances” as they often call modern electric cars.

Dacia Hipster – A small city model that Dacia itself describes as a “cube on four wheels”, with maximally used space and a playful design. TopGear liked that it doesn’t pretend to be premium, but openly goes for practicality and cute looks.

Mercedes Benz CLA – A limousine that won over the jury with “normality” in the best sense: comfortable, quiet, with precise steering and a very nice interior. TopGear describes it as the perfect car that can accompany you for a lifetime, without drama or posing.

Rolls Royce Black Badge Specter – An electric super-luxury coupe that TopGear called the true pinnacle of the world’s luxury class, even ahead of the glamorous Cadillac Celestiq. The Specter combines a quiet electric drive, a handcrafted cabin and the feeling of driving in the world’s most expensive piece of furniture.
