German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the Ukrainian side sent a document to US President Donald Trump in which it agreed to certain territorial concessions to end the war with Russia. Politics quoted by France 24.
According to him, the document was sent after a telephone conversation between European leaders and the American president. Merz said that at the end of the week he intends to personally discuss the amendments with the American leadership.
On December 10, Donald Trump himself spoke about a telephone conversation with the President of France, as well as the heads of government of Germany and Great Britain. He noted that the conversation was heated. The interlocutors invited him to fly to Europe for consultations with the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Earlier, CNN reported, citing official American and Ukrainian representatives, that on December 10, Ukraine presented the United States with its response to President Donald Trump’s plan to resolve the military conflict with Russia.
Many details of the amendments remain unknown, however, according to sources, in the current version the plan provides for the creation of a demilitarized zone in the area of the contact line and providing Ukraine with security guarantees similar to Article 5 of the NATO charter.
There is also talk about the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union in 2027. Ukraine’s obligation not to join the North Atlantic Alliance disappeared from the document – this issue is not mentioned at all. The plan also calls for holding elections in Ukraine.
Let us add on December 8, after a meeting in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelensky announced the impossibility of territorial concessions to Russia.
“Are we considering the issue of giving up some territories? We do not have any right under the law – according to the law of Ukraine, according to our Constitution, international law, to be honest. And we also have no moral right,” he told reporters.
