In a nod to Brazil, Trump government praises dosimetry PL

Landau highlighted, in his official account on X, that the United States sees this approval as an opportunity to improve bilateral relations between the United States and Brazil, reinforcing the importance of judicial independence and respect for the rule of law as pillars of democracy.

“We are finally seeing the beginning of a path towards improving our relations,” said the American Undersecretary of State.

Furthermore, the representative of Donald Trump’s government said that “the United States has consistently expressed concern about efforts to use the legal process to weaponize political differences in Brazil and therefore welcomes the bill approved by the House of Representatives as a first step to confront these abuses.”

The Chamber of Deputies approved the Dosimetry PL in the early hours of Wednesday, which seeks to reduce the sentences of former president Jair Bolsonaro, a former Trump ally sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison, and those involved in January 8th.

The project, which could see Bolsonaro leave prison in a closed regime in just over two years, will be submitted to a vote in the Senate and, if approved, will pass into the hands of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who will decide whether to veto it or not.

The United States has been closely monitoring the situation in Brazil, reiterating its commitment to democratic stability in the region and the need for justice not to be used for political purposes, at a time when the 2026 elections are approaching and polarization continues to mark the national political agenda.
