Disney announced this Thursday that it will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and enable artificial intelligence platform tools such as ChatGPT and Sora, use their characters and properties to generate short videos based on user prompts.
This three-year licensing agreement will allow users to generate videos of more than 200 Disney characters, MarvelStar Wars and Pixar, something that Disney described in a statement as “a historic agreement to bring iconic characters from all Disney brands to Sora.”
“Additionally, ChatGPT Images will be able to convert a few user words into fully generated images in seconds, using the same intellectual property. The agreement does not include images or voices of artists”, notes the statement.
“Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, providing new ways to create and share great stories with the world.” stated Robert Iger, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company.
According to Iger, this collaboration “thoughtfully and responsibly” expands the reach of Disney storytelling through generative AI, “respecting and protecting creators and their works.”

“Uniting iconic Disney stories and characters with OpenAI’s innovative technology puts imagination and creativity directly in the hands of Disney fans in ways never seen before, giving them richer, more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love.”, he concludes.
For his part, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAInoted in the statement that Disney is the “global leader in storytelling” and that they are “excited” to partner so that their AI tools “expand the way people create and enjoy quality content.”
