Privileges coming to European electric cars

The European Union is proposing special rights for smaller electric cars manufactured in Europe. Special rights would include, for example, parking benefits and better subsidies. It tells about it, among other things Financial Times.

The purpose of the privilege package is to improve the competitiveness of European cars. European manufacturers are under pressure, especially from China, which brings a significant number of inexpensive electric cars to Europe.

The weight limit for cars entering the new category is still being negotiated. Car manufacturers have suggested that the new category should include models already in production that fit the requirements. These could be, for example Citroen e-C3, Volkswagen Golf ha Renault’s Twingo.

What benefits?

The new category would therefore include electric cars manufactured in Europe that fall below the weight limit decided by the Commission.

According to the Financial Times, the benefits presented by the Commission are as follows:

Facilitated parking is offered for European small electric cars. This can mean, for example, cheaper or free access to paid parking spaces or charging points.

Cars in the new class are given 10 years of security for future regulations. With this, the commission tries to keep the price of cars under control, as regulatory changes often lead to large costs for car manufacturers.
