Dermatosis: a first case detected in Aude, ten cattle slaughtered

After the Pyrénées-Orientales, Ariège, Hautes-Pyrénées and Haute-Garonne, this is the 5th department of Occitanie where an outbreak of dermatosis has been identified.

A new case of lumpy skin disease (LCD) was discovered on a farm in Pomas, in Aude, the first outbreak in this department of Occitanie, the prefecture announced on Monday in a press release.

“As soon as the disease was confirmed this Sunday, the infected epidemiological unit, made up of ten cattle, had to be slaughtered,” said the Aude prefecture.

After the Pyrénées-Orientales, Ariège, Hautes-Pyrénées and Haute-Garonne, Aude is the 5th department in Occitanie where an outbreak of DNC has been detected.

The Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard repeated Monday morning on France 2 that the discussion was “open” with the agricultural profession, including on the terms of the health policy, but defended her strategy: the situation is currently “under control” and the outbreaks of disease have been eradicated.

She recalled the “three pillars” of this strategy: “depopulation (slaughter), vaccination and restriction of movement”, the only ones capable of overcoming this highly contagious animal disease, which is not transmissible to humans but which can seriously affect livestock.

The minister is expected in the afternoon in Haute-Garonne “in order to launch the vaccination campaign” of nearly a million animals, in a rebellious region where anger quickly turned into blocking actions.
