5 exercises to help keep your lungs healthy in winter

Spending 30 minutes jogging every day combined with breathing exercises and stretching the ribs helps expand the chest, clear the airways and enhance lung function.

Cold weather increases the risk of flu, colds, coughs, and sneezes, especially in people with weakened immune systems. Maintain healthy lungs through some exercises that help increase resistance, prevent infections and improve respiratory health.

Breathe alternately through both nostrils

Sit up straight, close one nostril with your thumb and inhale through the other nostril. Then, switch sides and repeat. Practicing 5-10 minutes a day helps improve airflow, increase lung capacity, balance energy and warm the body.

Breathe through your belly

Sit or lie down comfortably, placing one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. Inhale through your nose, let your belly expand, then exhale gently. Practicing for 5-10 minutes every morning helps strengthen the diaphragm, reduce shallow breathing and bring fresh air into the lungs.

Go for a light jog

Jogging 20-30 minutes a day can activate the lungs, increase respiratory muscle endurance and improve physical fitness. This exercise also helps the body fight shortness of breath that is common in winter.

Pursed lip breathing

When experiencing shortness of breath or fatigue after exercise, pursed-lip breathing helps soothe the lungs. Inhale through your nose, then purse your lips and exhale slowly. This method is effective in controlling shortness of breath caused by cold air causing lung constriction.

Rib stretching exercises

Stand straight, put your hands on your hips, inhale and stretch your chest out, hold for 5 counts, then exhale slowly and return to the starting position. Exercises help expand the chest wall, thin mucus and reduce joint stiffness – common symptoms of colds.

To protect your lungs, dress warmly, use layers of clothing to retain heat and keep out cold air. Drinking enough water helps keep the lining of the respiratory tract moist, and you can use a humidifier in the house to prevent the airways from drying out. Washing your hands regularly can reduce your risk of infection, as respiratory viruses are more common in the winter
