The demolition of the viaduct is already in full swing. The concrete construction on which many drivers stood still cursing in the traffic jam will make way for a sunken and green Ring.
To once again underline the importance of these works, there is Oosterlicht. For three evenings, visitors can say goodbye to the viaduct. They do this via a kilometer-long course between colorful projections. Oosterlicht is the work of students at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
“Oosterlicht is an ode to change,” said Bart Van Camp, Environment Director at client Lantis. “It symbolizes the transition to a liveable city, where breathing space returns and room is created for a greener, healthier environment.”
The demolition should be complete by 2027. Then the construction of the deepened Ring with Ring Parks on top will begin. We will have to wait until 2033 for all this to be completed.
Anyone who decides to take a look now is too late. All evenings are already fully booked. If you still want to get a taste of the atmosphere, you can do so on the website Gazette of Antwerp. The first 4,400 walkers will start their walk under the viaduct at 5.30 pm. On the three evenings together, 14,000 people will have enjoyed Oosterlicht and said goodbye to the viaduct.
