Edmonton (Canada) – Only a few days left until Christmas Eve. The anticipation of the holidays is increasing in Germany. Just in time for the holidays, meteorologists are now giving hope for falling temperatures and perhaps a white Christmas here. Temperatures should be around freezing point and In some places even snow falls.
Temperatures around freezing point? Snowfall in some places? Residents can do this in some parts in Canada just smile wearily – if they can even keep their lips apart in the bitter cold.
Up to minus 53 degrees in parts of Canada
Because in the North American country the thermometer fell to record temperatures a few days ago: up to minus 53 degrees! According to experts, such low temperatures have not been recorded at this point in the winter for decades.
The reason for the extreme Wetter: Due to a disruption in the polar vortex, large amounts of Arctic air masses had expanded unusually far south. This is reported by the Canadian television network CBC.
Parts of Lake Ontario have frozen over due to the extreme cold outside the Canadian metropolis of Toronto
Cold warnings have been issued for the regions of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba – the perceived cold in these areas is currently minus 40 degrees due to the high wind speeds – the so-called wind chill effect.
Can the Canada cold hammer also come to us?
Is there a risk that this extreme cold from Canada will soon hit us? No, says Nico Bauer. The Master of Science meteorologist at the German Weather Service (DWD) told BILD: “The overall weather situation is that the lower temperatures around Christmas Eve will be brought to us by colder air masses from Eastern Europe – i.e. not from the West.”
The Atlantic as a heat buffer
The meteorologist continues: “It is not possible for such cold to come to us from Canada. The Atlantic lies between Canada and Europe. And it is mild. From the west we get a rather humid and mild climate.”
