Instagram limits the number of hashtags that can be included per publication to five

Instagram aims to limit the number of ‘hashtags’ that users can include in their publications to a maximum of five, in order to avoid their excessive use and improve their operation when promoting content in the red social.

Hashtags are a system that allows you to organize and categorize related posts on social networks, using the pound symbol ‘#’ before a phrase or term that refers to a specific topic. This method makes it easier for users to find topic-specific content on social media.

In this sense, although until now Instagram users can use all the ‘hashtags’ they consider necessary in their publications, the Meta social network has begun to limit its use to five ‘hashtags’ per publication.

This was detailed by the director of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, in a message on his ‘Instagram Tips’ Channel, where he explained that, although “it may be tempting” to use more than five ‘hashtags’, “a few tags work better than a long generic list.”

This is because the ‘hashtag’ system works better if users select more specific ‘hashtag’ words or terms consistent with the publication, including many on broader topics. “Quality is more important than quantity,” stated Mosseri.

In addition, he also recalled that although hashtags help in the search, they do not automatically expand the reach of the publications. Therefore, he has recommended that, for those who want to reach more users, they focus on “finding out what type of content resonates with their audience.”
