Café Den Beer reopens on Gemeenteplein: “We are bringing back the brown folk pub”

“My brother Nik and his wife Ilva are going to be the faces of the café,” says Fatos Shenaj. His family comes from Sint-Niklaas and has a lot of experience in the catering industry. “Café Den Beer will be our fifth business. We have catering establishments in Sint-Niklaas and Zele. We are also present in Hoboken with Café Buffalo. Together with our parents we like to work in the catering industry, especially for contact with the guests. We wanted to come to Antwerp. We are now in Hoboken and Mortsel, but if possible we would like to open another business in the city of Antwerp itself.”

Fatos sees the location as an important asset. “The location on the Gemeenteplein, close to the tram turning loop with lots of passage and a beautiful terrace, made us decide to come to Mortsel.”

To choose a name, the family did some research. “We spoke to people from the neighborhood and many saw café Den Beer as the best café in Mortsel. It had a good name that we are now going to bring back. The guests will discover a traditional brown café where everyone is welcome. We have three beers on tap and during the weekends we regularly bring in DJs.”

The signs for Café ‘t Pleintje are still hanging on the outside facade, but they will be replaced during January to make it clear that it is Café Den Beer again. The café is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 am, on Wednesday from 8 am and on Sunday at 12 noon.
