The deadly jellyfish in the Far East – everything you must know

The venom of this jellyfish contains particularly strong neurotoxins and cardiac toxins. It directly damages the heart muscle cells and the nervous system, and causes a serious disruption in the electrical activity of the heart.

The symptoms usually appear immediately: intense pain, severe burning and red linear marks on the skin. Within minutes, shortness of breath, heart rhythm disturbances, a sharp drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness may develop.

The main danger is rapid cardiac collapse and even cardiac arrest. In children, even a relatively brief contact with the arms may be enough to cause life-threatening injury.

The treatment includes immediate rinsing with vinegar to prevent further firing of the venom cells, resuscitation if necessary and urgent evacuation to a hospital with close cardiac monitoring. Fresh water is prohibited for use in the initial stage.

The striking feature is that the bite itself may be almost imperceptible. After a delay of 20 to 40 minutes, severe muscle and stomach pains appear, extreme restlessness, a sharp increase in blood pressure, a rapid pulse and sometimes shortness of breath and pulmonary edema.

The dangers include cardiac events, brain bleeds and respiratory collapse. In children, the risk is particularly high due to the ratio between the amount of venom and the size of the body. The treatment is carried out in a hospital and includes cardiac monitoring, blood pressure balance, pain management and supportive care. In the initial stage, the use of vinegar is recommended.

Symptoms include sharp pain, burning and clear skin marks. In some cases, Irukandji syndrome develops with delayed aggravation. The main danger is cardiac complications, especially in children or after extensive exposure.

The treatment is similar to the other cube jellyfish, and includes vinegar, medical evacuation and monitoring.

Its venom contains a nerve toxin that causes extremely strong pain. Symptoms include acute pain, linear skin lesions and sometimes fever, vomiting and a generalized reaction.

In most cases it is not fatal, but severe reactions and even anaphylaxis have been described in children and sensitive people. Treatment includes careful removal of arms, washing with vinegar or seawater, pain treatment and medical supervision as needed.
