‘Only for men’1960 film directed by Fernando Fernan Gomez will arrive on FlixOlé this Saturday, December 27. It is a adaptation of Miguel Mihura’s play ‘Sublime decision’ which addresses the integration of women into the world of work.
This stinging and satirical film sets its plot in Madrid at the end of the 19th century, a time when political turnism prevailed between conservatives and liberals.. The film revolves around Florita, played by Analía Gadé, a young woman from the lower class who, along with her sister, endures the daily pressure of her family to find a husband who will help them escape from misery.
After a final heartbreak caused by two well-off false suitors, played by Fernando Fernán Gómez and Manuel AlexandreFlorita makes an unusual and risky decision: apply for a job in the Ministry of Public Works, a territory limited only to men.
His entry into the Administration causes a political, media and social schism and arouses rejection not only from her colleagues, but also from other women who perceive their presence as a threat to the established order. However, Florita proves to be the only efficient worker there, exposing the hypocrisy of a society that marginalizes women and tolerates institutional ineffectiveness.
In ‘Only for men’ Fernán Gómez’s sharp humor, based on Mihura’s libretto, knows no time. Set in times of the Restoration, it could well be set in the Franco era in which it was conceived. Thanks to its ingenuity, the film provokes laughter and reflection in equal parts in the viewer.
Fernán Gómez not only directs but also stars in the filmin which his charisma as a comic actor, together with a direction that gives the work a marked theatrical spirit, make the film one of the most outstanding in Spanish cinema of the 60s. The cast is completed by actors such as Erasmo Pascual and Juan Calvo, who play two officials defeated by life.
‘Only for Men’ is a film with a clear feminist inclination in a comedic way, something unusual in classic Spanish cinema. In the field of drama, FlixOlé houses in its catalog titles such as ‘Calle mayor’ by Juan Antonio Bardem, ‘La aunt Tula’ by Miguel Picazo, ‘Vámonos, Bárbara’ by Cecilia Bartolomé or films by Luis Buñuel such as ‘Viridiana’ and ‘Tristana’.
