The Syrian Interior Ministry reported that a warehouse containing SAM-7 anti-aircraft missiles was discovered in the al-Bukamel area, near the border with Iraq.
The cache was located inside the house. The air defense systems were reportedly intended for smuggling from Syria. An investigation has been launched to identify and arrest those involved in the smuggling attempt.
“The Ministry will continue to fight against illegal activities as part of efforts to ensure the security and stability of the state,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.
The SAM-7 man-portable anti-aircraft missile system, whose real name is Strela, was developed in the USSR and entered service in the 60s of the 20th century. Its first combat use occurred during the War of Attrition.
