The special scrutiny of the general elections of November 30 continued this Tuesday after two long interruptions, since Monday, with results that continue to favor the presidential candidate of the conservative National Party, Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura.
In the midst of the uncertainty that the country is experiencing, the head of Parliament, Luis Redondo, deputy for the ruling Freedom and Refoundation Party (Libre, left), whose presidential candidate, Rixi Moncada, is third with less than 20% of votes, insisted this Tuesday on the Legislative television channel that there was an “electoral coup”.
The special scrutiny, which began on December 18 five days late, has so far reviewed 2,309 of the 2,792 minutes with inconsistencies, according to records from the National Electoral Council (CNE).
The CNE preliminary report with 99.92% of the minutes scrutinized indicates that Asfura leads the vote with the 40.29% of the votes, followed by Salvador Nasralla, from the also conservative Liberal Party, with 39.52%and Moncada remains in third place, with 19.18%.
The CNE has until December 30 to announce the official results of the elections, but if he does not do so, the problem goes to Parliament, where Redondo said this Tuesday that this power of the State is ready “to proceed in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic to carry out everything necessary to carry out the scrutiny and subsequent declaration.”
“We are going to review the 19,167 vote receiving boards and count vote by vote in the counting process, so that the popular will is truly respected. The people have the right to know what they put into each of those vote-receiving boards,” emphasized the president of Parliament, a member of the Free Party, who took office four years ago irregularly and with violent incidents.
Redondo, whose visa to enter that country has apparently been canceled by the United States, He also again accused President Trump of “interference,” for his support expressed before the elections for the presidential candidate of the National Party, and for coming warning that the will of Hondurans at the polls must be respected.
With one week left until the deadline for the CNE to provide the results of the elections, Hondurans remain uncertain, while the presidential candidate of the Liberal Party repeatedly demands a “vote-by-vote” recount of all the minutes, something that the electoral authority has ruled out, claiming that the regulations do not allow it.
Nasralla, who joined the Liberal Party this year after two frustrated attempts to be president with two different parties, has entered into controversy with the Liberals’ Central Executive Council, which disagrees with the “vote-by-vote” counting he demands.
Despite the differences, several liberal leaders acknowledge that Nasralla revitalized the party, which had remained relegated since the 2009 coup d’état.who overthrew then-president Manuel Zelayawho at the time was a liberal and is now general coordinator of the Free Party, which also demands a “vote by vote” recount.
Zelaya is also the husband and main advisor of the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, who on the 18th said that she will accept the official results of the CNE and that there will be a “peaceful” transition of power.
