The Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken has died at the age of just 27. This was announced by the Norwegian Federation and the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Accordingly, Bakken, who celebrated a World Cup victory at Holmenkollen in Oslo in the 2021/22 season and won the small ball in the mass start, was found dead in his hotel room in Lavazè during a training camp in Italy.
The cause of death is currently unclear. “Our thoughts are primarily with Sivert’s family and everyone close to him, both in Norway and abroad,” said Secretary General Emilie Nordskar: “We are working on site with the Italian authorities.”
The IBU was “deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of Sivert Bakken’s sudden death,” said IBU President Olle Dahlin: “His death at such a young age is unbelievable, but he will not be forgotten and will remain in our hearts forever.” After the 2021/22 World Cup season, Bakken was diagnosed with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. In November 2024 he made his return to IBU competitions. Most recently he competed at the World Cup in Le Grand Bornand and, among other things, took fifth place in the sprint.
Biathlon colleagues mourn: “That’s not fair”
“Sivert’s comeback in biathlon after a period of great difficulty was a source of great joy for everyone in the biathlon family and an inspiring testament to his resilience and determination,” said Dahlin: “The IBU’s thoughts are with Sivert’s family and friends, his team and all members of the Norwegian biathlon family during this difficult time.”
Numerous active and retired biathletes immediately reported on social networks. “Sivert, it was too early. One of the greatest talents in the history of Norwegian biathlon,” wrote the Norwegian record world champion Johannes Thingnes Bö. “We had planned to ski together today, but you didn’t come. We had planned to celebrate New Year’s Eve together, but you won’t be there,” wrote the Italian Tommaso Giacomel: “Life has already been so hard on you that a while ago it stopped you for more than two years, and now this. This is not fair.”
The German Ski Association (DSV) also expressed its condolences. “It was a great privilege to compete against someone who embodied determination and endurance like no other,” wrote the DSV on Instagram: “Your career has left traces that will not be forgotten.”
