Syria and Russia are considering the renewal of relations

According to him, one of the goals of the talks is to prevent a situation where Russia becomes a blocking factor in future decisions concerning Syria. At the same time, he points out that Russia has a deep network of connections within the Syrian territory, which includes connections with elements identified with the remnants of the previous regime, as well as with SDF forces in the northeast of the country. In addition, Russia’s military presence remains the same – at the bases in Qamishli, Hamimim and the military port in Tartus – a fact that gives it a lasting influence.

“Russia and Syria have found overlapping interests”

According to him, the focus of the conflict around Syria is not only internal. “The main conflict is regional, and it includes dealing with Israel and with regional projects attributed to it,” he said, adding that it is a broad struggle that goes beyond the borders of the Syrian arena. Matozov emphasized that in view of this reality there is a need to build a new relationship between Moscow and Damascus. “It is no longer an alliance based on the Ba’ath party, but a partnership with the new leadership and the regional alliances it maintains,” he said. According to him, the current rapprochement between the countries reflects a common understanding of the national security mechanisms on both sides, according to which “Russia and Syria have found overlapping interests in the regional campaign currently underway in the Middle East.”
