Questions about Tesla’s door design after a series of complaints: American authority starts safety investigation

The reason for the investigation is, among other things, an incident in which a driver was unable to leave his vehicle through the doors after a fire and ultimately had to escape through a window. According to the complaint, the mechanical emergency lever was difficult to find and not clearly labeled, which could cost valuable time in a stressful situation.

Tesla vehicles primarily use electronic door openers. Mechanical alternatives are provided for emergencies, but they are often located in less visible places, especially near the rear doors. This poses a problem, the American regulator says, because passengers who are not familiar with the system may not know how to leave the vehicle if the power goes out.

This concern is not only among supervisors, but also among directors themselves. According to The Independent some Tesla owners have switched to carrying emergency equipment such as glass breakers to help them exit the vehicle. Others take the time to explain to passengers in advance where the hidden emergency release is located. Some Tesla drivers are even choosing to sell their vehicle, according to the British newspaper.

The contrast between aesthetics and ease of use is also increasingly discussed. The flat, recessed door handles contribute to Tesla’s sleek appearance, but critics say intuitive operation is more important in panic situations. Tesla has now indicated that it is working on improvements that will better coordinate electrical and mechanical controls, although it is still unclear when those adjustments will be made.
