Gasoline prices are at their lowest in more than three years in France

To the delight of motorists, the price of gasoline has continued to fall for several months. A liter of diesel, which represents 65% of fuel sales volumes, sold at 1.5299 euros on average, its lowest level in more than four years, apart from a marked drop last April.

Indeed, according to data compiled by the government consulted on Friday by AFP, fuel prices at the pump were last week at their lowest level in more than three years in France, in the wake of falling oil prices.

According to Francis Pousse, president of service stations and new energies within the professional union Mobilians (automotive service companies), the fall in the price of black gold, which has been trading in recent days around 60 dollars per barrel, is “the main cause” of this drop in prices at the pump. This year’s increase in production by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies as well as that of other countries, combined with concerns about demand, are weighing on prices.

Another factor favorable to a reduction in the bill, “a euro which has strengthened” in relation to the dollar, underlines Francis Pousse.

Will this trend last? Not sure. French oil companies warned at the end of November that fuel prices would increase by 4 to 6 cents per liter from January 1, a consequence of changes to the energy savings certificate (EEC) system. The impact of this increase on prices at the pump should be spread over the first two weeks of January, adds the president of service stations and new energies within the professional union Mobilians.
