NMBS keeps four stations open at night so that homeless people do not have to sleep in freezing cold

The cold wave that is ravaging the country resulted in the coldest Christmas day in fifteen years. Temperatures also regularly drop below zero at night. That is why the stations of Brussels South, Antwerp Central, Ghent-Sint-Pieters and Liège-Guillemins remain exceptionally open at night. NMBS will do this as usual as long as negative temperatures persist. Under the watchful eye of the rail security service Securail, homeless people can stay in a room in the station where it is warm and there are sanitary facilities.

“We will of course first consult with the official local homeless organizations to see if there is room there,” Temmerman explains. “A station is not the ideal place to spend the night.” If there is no more room at the local shelter, or the homeless person in question does not want to leave, they can spend the night at the station, according to the spokesperson.
