There are more than a thousand flights canceled and they ask to suspend ground travel

The post-Christmas snowstorm would hit New York between 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday. The heaviest snowfall period is expected to be between one and two inches per hour and occur between 6 p.m. and midnight, making travel very difficult.

In the northeast, northern Middlesex, northern New London, southern Middlesex and southern New London counties will be affected. Also parts of southern Connecticut, northeastern New Jersey, New Haven, Suffolk, and extreme northeastern Pennsylvania.

Given the forecast, airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights in the United States, so it is also expected that there will be stranded passengers on Christmas trips.

A total of 1,364 flights had been canceled and 4,267 delayed until 6:30 p.m. GMT on Friday, according to the FlightAware website, which reported that New York and Chicago airports were among the most affected.

New York was preparing to receive up to 25 centimeters snow overnight, with subzero temperatures and cold weather that could last into the weekend. According to FlightAware, New York-area airports recorded 785 flight cancellations.

The authorities also asked to cancel land travel. “People should consider postpone all trips. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution,” they said.

Additionally, they recommended bringing “a storm kit that includes items such as tire chains, jump cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing” and a first aid kit.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast snowfall in the upper Great Lakes region during the day, with the focus of the storm shifting to the northeast.

Added to the risk generated by the snow are the dangerous falls of sleet and drizzle that could create a layer of ice on the routes. “Scattered areas of tree damage and power outages are possible in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland,” the US Weather Service added.

“Road conditions will be dangerous for those returning from vacation,” he warned.

New York Mayor Eric Adams announced a winter storm warning and that municipal crews were deployed to clear roads.

“All New Yorkers should prepare: avoid driving if possible and reserve more time for public transportation,” Adams said.

Connecticut, for its part, activated the Extreme Cold Weather Protocol on Thursday, which will remain in effect until Sunday morning, as reported by Governor Ned Lamont on its X page.

“It appears that Connecticut is about to receive its first significant snowfall of the season. As of noon today, the state is forecast to receive between 15 and 30 centimeters of snow overnight on Friday,” Lamont said.
