“Farewell Teddy”: Perry Bamonte, guitarist and keyboardist of the group The Cure, has died

The Cure is in mourning. Perry Bamonte, the guitarist and keyboardist of the British new wave group, has died at the age of 65. He “died at home after a short illness at Christmas”, according to a press release published this Friday on the group’s website, expressing his “immense sadness”.

“Teddy”, his nickname, was also the bassist for the group Love Amongst Ruin, which released two studio albums. It was in 1990 that he became a full member of The Cure. “Discreet, intense, intuitive, constant and immensely creative, Teddy was a warm heart and an essential part of The Cure’s history. (…) We will miss him greatly,” we can read in this text.

On the Instagram network, the group’s drummer, Lol Tolhurst, said he was “so sad” about Bamonte’s death, adding “Farewell Teddy”.

To the creation of numerous albums

The Cure, with its iconic singer Robert Smith, 66, has transformed throughout its prolific decades. Perry Bamonte was first part of the group’s technical team from 1984 before experiencing two periods as a member of the group, as a guitarist for 14 years, notably playing six-string bass, then keyboards since 2022.

In its statement, The Cure noted that he had contributed to the creation of numerous albums, including “Wish” (1992), “Wild Mood Swings” (1996), “Bloodflowers” (2000), “Acoustic Hits” (2001) and “The Cure” (2004). He has given more than 490 concerts, the most recent of which were “among the best in the group’s history,” the press release said.

Carried by the plaintive and heartbreaking voice of Robert Smith, The Cure helped shape gothic rock with albums like “Pornography” (1982). The group later found success with much more upbeat songs, including “Friday I’m in Love.” His last albums date from 2008 (“4:13 Dream”) and last year with “Songs of a Lost World”.
