Boomerang, the new free, login-free file transfer service from the co-founder of WeTransfer

The co-founder of WeTransfer has launched an alternative file transfer service that seeks to offer a simple, privacy-focused tool that can be used for free and without the need to log in.

Nalden, one of the co-founders of WeTransfer, has launched Boomerang, a new file transfer service that will require no login to use to facilitate fast transfers.

This new service, which is available on the web and will soon arrive on Mac, as already anticipated on the social network X, aims to recover the simplicity that characterized WeTransfer in its beginnings. “It’s the simplicity of sharing something quickly, which saves time. You don’t need to register or verify your email,” Nalden explained to TechCrunch and reports Europa Press.

The new service will offer up to 1GB of storage to non-logged-in users for free, and will support sending files up to 1GB with an expiration time of seven days. However, it will also offer two account types with login.

On the one hand, a free account, which will increase the storage capacity to 3GB and will support files up to 3GB. It will also offer additional benefits such as the ability to add and delete files at any time, a history of uploaded files and emoji customization.

On the other hand, a paid account that, for $6.99 per month, offers a total capacity of up to 500GB and the possibility of sending files weighing up to 5GB that will expire after 90 days, along with advanced options such as the possibility of collaborating, having password protection and inviting other users unlimitedly.

In September, Boomerang already shared its approach to privacy, ensuring that files are automatically deleted when the expiration period is reached and that they do not analyze what users share or use it to track them or create a behavioral profile. They also do not sell or share this data to third-party companies.

The company responsible for this service also emphasizes that they will not use the content uploaded by users to train artificial intelligence models nor will they offer advertising.

This stance on privacy clashes with the one that WeTransfer has recently promoted, especially after its acquisition by the Italian Bending Spoons last year, with which Nalden does not seem to be happy.

In addition to a reorganization and expansion of subscription plans, it implemented changes to transfer links and announced the use of user files to train AI, although it eventually retracted this decision. He also laid off 75 percent of the workforce.

“Bending Spoons doesn’t care about people. Although I understand that it is their private equity strategy, I have noticed that since I left WeTransfer in 2019 there were many updates that, in my opinion, were ruining the product,” he said in statements to the aforementioned media.
