The OAS convenes its Permanent Council for next Tuesday after the US attack on Venezuela

The Organization of American States (OAS) has announced the convening of its Permanent Council for next Tuesday, January 6, to address the situation in Venezuela after the capture of its president, Nicolás Maduro, in a US military raid in Caracas.

The Council will be held at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time (4:00 p.m. Spanish peninsular time) in the Simón Bolívar Room at the OAS headquarters in Washington to “consider recent events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”

The call is made by the president of the OAS Permanent Council and representative of Colombia, Ambassador Luis Ernesto Vargas, on behalf of the Colombian Government.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, called on Saturday for a de-escalation in Venezuela that leads to a “peaceful exit” under the parameters of international law.

The “priority” for Randim is to prevent an escalation of tension and support a “peaceful solution.” In this sense, he has called on all actors involved to “fully” respect international law, committed to the “peaceful settlement of disputes” and respect for Human Rights.

Likewise, he has indicated that the path to resolving the conflict must be based on “the will of (the) Venezuelan people”, taking into account the already existing institutional order and following the Constitution of Venezuela.
