UNRA fires workers from Gaza who are staying outside the Strip

The UNRWA agency has announced the termination of the employment of local workers, residents of Gaza, who are staying outside the Strip. The decision, which takes effect immediately, stems from an ongoing financial crisis the agency has encountered, according to reports in Palestinian media and an official letter sent to the workers.

At the same time, remote work arrangements and salary payments to employees who do not stay in Gaza and do not perform life-saving tasks or essential work were stopped. As a result, these workers were put on an exceptional leave starting March 1, 2025, for a period planned to last up to a year.

From wage freeze to final dismissal

The agency stated that efforts were made to secure the funds needed to continue the programs and pay the salaries, but the economic situation continued to deteriorate despite this.

According to the announcement, the fired employees will be entitled to severance pay, notice pay and other benefits in accordance with the local employee rules.

The agency instructed the employees to complete the termination of service procedures by January 17, 2026, with the finalization of the account and payments expected to be made by January 31, 2026.

Meetings in Egypt and employment assistance

The letter stated that the management of the organization will hold informative meetings with the employees, including face-to-face meetings in Egypt scheduled for the week beginning January 18, 2026.

In addition, the employees were offered assistance in job search training and support from the welfare department of the organization. UNRA expressed regret for the circumstances that led to the decision and thanked the employees for their contribution.
