Tenerife is known for its breathtaking views, attractions for all ages and luxurious hotels, but it has a trump card that doesn’t always get the stage it deserves: the carnival. This is one of the largest and most impressive events in the world, the second largest carnival after Rio de Janeiro, and it is no less wild, colorful and full of energy.

In 2026 the carnival will take place between the dates 16.1-22.2when the last week is considered the peak of the celebrations. The main events take place in the north of the island, mainly inSanta Cruise Da Tenerife and inPuerto Da her Cruiseand therefore for those who plan to come during this period it is recommended to spend the night in one of these cities or in towns close to them such as La Laguna.

1. The first ceremony of the carnival, Gala Reina – the ceremony of choosing the queen of the carnival

The ceremony will take place in Puerto de la Cruz on 12.2.

The spotlight at the ceremony is directed first and foremost to the costume – much more than to the contestant who wears it. These are huge handmade creations, each of which is sometimes worked on for an entire year, at a cost that can cross the 30 thousand euro threshold, financed by local businesses. These impressive costumes weigh over 20 kilograms, so the participants who are chosen to present them often go through dedicated fitness training even before the competition, in order to meet the physical challenge posed by the dress.

The parade will take place in Santa Cruz on the 13.2 at 20:00, the parade opens the carnival with a colorful and impressive procession with costumes, music and dancing that puts the city in a real holiday atmosphere. Come dressed up!

3. The big central parade

The parade will take place in Santa Cruz on February 17 at 4:00 p.m.

The main event of the carnival – the official procession with hundreds of participants, huge carriages and fancy costumes.

4. Men’s marathon race in high heels

This funny and unique event will take place on 20.2 in Puerto de la Cruz.

A unique and entertaining event, in which men in costumes wearing high heels compete along a course through the streets of the city.

5. The sardine burial ceremony

The sardine burial event will take place simultaneously on 18.2 in Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz. The meaning of the event is the separation from the flesh in Christianity. It is a procession headed by a large sardine doll, followed by all the participants, men and women alike. The procession ends with the burning of the sardines.

6. Children’s carnival parade

The parade will take place in Santa Cruz on 20.2 in the city center.

7. The closing event of the carnival

The end of the carnival takes place with a huge fireworks show, and it is important to note that the fireworks show takes place both in Puerto de la Cruz (21.2) and in Santa Cruz (22.2).

It is important to know: The schedule of carnival events may change depending on the organizers’ decisions and weather conditions. Parades, shows and ceremonies may be postponed, canceled or moved to an alternate location. It is recommended to be updated in advance on the official website of the carnival or on the social media pages of the municipality. It is important to note that the places for hotels in the north run out relatively quickly and their prices will only increase. Therefore, you should close rooms in advance to avoid full occupancy or high prices. Also, it should be taken into account that on the various days of the carnival, some of the streets in the northern area may be blocked or a parking problem may arise with a car, and this will require parking in parking lots and walking.

1. If you have a successful costume that doesn’t take up much space in your suitcase, consider bringing it with you. At most you can buy something there or just dress in a particularly colorful way. There are also lots of costumes of cartoon characters, which could remind us of Purim and allow us to fool around during the carnival period and take an active part in the celebrations.
2. The recommended way to get around during Carnival between Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz (a distance of about 20 minutes’ drive) is by taxi or public transportation or a private driver, due to the expected load of visitors and parking issues especially during Carnival days. Throughout the carnival period, from late evening (around midnight) until morning, there is music and dancing in the streets.
