New study: the foods and drinks that contain the most plastic

Most people are already aware that microplastics are found in food and drink – and especially in fish and seafood. However, experts warn that our daily exposure to the tiny plastic particles is much wider, and also includes surprising foods found in almost every home. Since the 1960s, the production of plastic in the world has been on a constant rise, and about 8 million tons of it end up in the oceans every year.

chewing gum

According to Rolf, chewing gum is actually equivalent to chewing plastic. Most chewing gums are made from a synthetic base of plastic and rubber, which in the chewing process releases microplastic particles. One gram of chewing gum may release up to 637 particles. Even “natural” chewing gums are not free from the problem, most likely due to contamination in the production or packaging process. Most of the particles are released in the first eight minutes of chewing.

salt

Studies have found that 94% of the salt products tested in the world contained microplastics. Surprisingly, the contamination is found higher precisely in continental salts, such as Himalayan salt, and not necessarily in sea salt. Disposable plastic spice grinders can also make the situation worse – grinding a tenth of a gram of salt can release thousands of particles. It is recommended to use metal or ceramic grinders and store salt in non-plastic containers.

Apples and carrots

Microplastics and nanoplastics (extremely tiny particles) have also been found in fruits and vegetables. They penetrate the plants through the roots and even accumulate on the bark. Studies have found that apples and carrots are among the most contaminated, while lettuce has been found to be less contaminated. However, Rolf emphasizes that the health benefits of fruits and vegetables still far outweigh the risk.

Tea and coffee

Microplastics don’t just come from tea bags. Tea leaves, coffee and milk may also contain them. One of the main sources is disposable plastic-coated drinking cups: the high heat causes particles to be released into the drink. Hot drinks contain more microplastics than cold drinks. Beyond loose leaf tea, using reusable glass or metal cups and buying milk in glass bottles – may reduce exposure.
