Cuba rejects talks with the US and affirms that the contacts refer to the “immigration field”

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, rejected this Monday the existence of talks with the US Government and has assured that the only contacts between the parties are of a “technical” nature and refer to the “immigration area”, statements that come shortly after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened the island.

“We have always been willing to maintain a serious and responsible dialogue with the different governments of the United States, including the current one, on the basis of sovereign equality, mutual respect, principles of International Law, reciprocal benefit… without interference in internal affairs and with full respect for our independence,” the president stressed in a message broadcast through social networks.

In this sense, he has clarified that the origin and “extreme tightening of the blockade have no relationship with Cubans and residents in the United States,” who “are pushed there by this failed policy and the privileges of the Cuban Adjustment Act.” “They are now victims of the change in policies towards migrants and the betrayal of Miami politicians,” he stated.

Furthermore, he stressed that “there are bilateral migration agreements in force that Cuba scrupulously complies with.” “As history shows, relations between the United States and Cuba, in order to advance, must be based on International Law instead of hostility, threats and economic coercion,” he noted.

On Sunday, Trump himself urged Cuban authorities to “reach an agreement” after highlighting that after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last weekend, oil and money shipments from Caracas “have run out.” “I strongly invite you to reach an agreement before it is too late (…). There will be no more oil or money for Cuba. Zero!”, he highlighted then.
