Greenland defends that it is part of Denmark and is committed to cooperating with NATO to “defend the island”

The Government of Greenland defended this Monday that it is part of Denmark and has opted for cooperation with NATO to “defend the island” after the US president, Donald Trump, reiterated his desire to annex the territory, an issue that has set off alarm bells in Europe.

“Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and, as part of this, is a member of NATO. The Greenlandic Government will continue to increase its efforts to ensure that the defense of the island takes place under the auspices of the Atlantic Alliance,” said the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in a statement released through social networks.

In this sense, he pointed out that “based on the very positive statement issued in the past by NATO members in relation to Greenland, the Government will increase its efforts to guarantee the defense of the territory.”

“All member states of the Alliance, including the United States, have a common interest in defending this island, and the Government will work with Denmark to guarantee dialogue within NATO on this matter,” he stated, while emphasizing the idea that this area is always “under the umbrella of the Western alliance in terms of defense.”

Thus, he said he was aware that “many people are following the situation closely.” “I understand that there is concern,” he clarified, while claiming the “need to be completely clear” about these matters. “The situation with respect to NATO is a basic and fixed line. There is a lot of attention focused on the area. This is positive in itself. We have a strategic importance and our security is important. For us. For our allies. And for stability in the Arctic,” he highlighted.

“That is why the Government will work to ensure that defense development in and around Greenland is carried out in close cooperation with NATO. In dialogue with our allies, including the United States. And in collaboration with Denmark. We are a democratic society, which makes its own decisions, and our actions are based on International Law,” he said.
