The Egged bus company has begun testing a new fare payment system that allows passengers to pay with regular credit cards, as well as using e-wallets on smartphones and smartwatches. The pilot project has already started in Eilat, and Jerusalem and Haifa will join next week.
The innovation is aimed primarily at tourists and Israelis who rarely use public transport.
When paying by card, the full cost of the trip is debited without taking into account benefits.
When checking tickets, the controller must present for reading the same card or device with which the payment was made.
