BBC Persian: Iranian authorities demand ransom for bodies of killed protesters

According to BBC Persian interlocutors, the bodies are in morgues and hospitals, and the authorities do not allow them to be taken away until relatives hand over money.

An example is given of a case in the northern city of Rasht, where one family was demanded 700 million tomans (approximately $5,000) for the return of a body.

At the same time, the death toll over more than two weeks of protests is estimated at at least 2,435 people (HRANA data cited by the BBC).

Previously, Iranian opposition sources spoke of tens of thousands killed (up to 20 thousand or even up to 50 thousand). It is not possible to verify this information.
