Germany: one dead in a collision between a bus and a locomotive in Hamburg

A collision between a bus and a locomotive left one dead and around ten injured on Friday in the port area of ​​Hamburg, in northern Germany.

All the victims were on the bus: in addition to the deceased person, the driver was “in mortal danger”, two passengers were seriously injured and six others were slightly injured, detailed a fire brigade spokesperson. The deceased “died from his injuries at the scene,” police said in a statement.

Some of the injured were treated on site, while the rest were transferred to a hospital. The bus driver “was the last to be freed, because he was stuck,” according to the same source. The locomotive driver was reportedly unhurt.

The cause of the accident still unknown

The accident occurred in the heart of the immense port area of ​​Hamburg, at an unguarded level crossing, “for a reason still undetermined”, specifies the police in its press release.

According to the German daily Bild, 80 rescuers from the ambulance and fire services went to the scene of the accident. “Rescue operations are complex. The bus is deformed and completely crushed at the front. We therefore use heavy equipment to extract the people on board,” a fire brigade spokesperson was quoted as saying by Bild.

A reception has been set up for relatives of the victims at the nearest bus stop. The criminal police were mobilized to participate in the investigation.
