The head of OnePlus is under investigation in Taiwan, they also issued a warrant

Taiwanese authorities say they have issued a warrant for Pete Lau and that two people from Taiwan who allegedly helped him organize the employment have also been charged. According to their allegations, OnePlus illegally recruited more than 70 engineers in Taiwan to R&D, test and verify software for their devices.

The indictments also mention the way in which it was allegedly done: OnePlus, according to the prosecutors, set up a shell company in Hong Kong with a different name, then opened a branch in Taiwan in 2015 without state approval. By doing so, they claim, they would violate the Taiwanese law that regulates business and employment related to companies from China.

It is said that the case is part of Taiwan’s broader pressure on Chinese technology firms that are trying to reach local staff, especially in high tech sectors. As an example, they state that in August 2025, the authorities investigated 16 Chinese companies due to suspicions of ‘covert’ recruitment of experts.

For OnePlus users in Europe and Croatia, this is not news that changes anything overnight, because it is not about device failure, trade or user accounts, but about the way of doing business and employment. But reputational and political pressure can affect future partnerships, R&D and the way the brand operates in sensitive markets. OnePlus and Oppo have not yet made an official comment, according to Reuters.
