Meta dismantles its virtual reality gaming division

The portfolio of the studios involved includes titles of absolute importance in the contemporary videogame panorama. Armature Studio is known to the general public for having taken care of the successful virtual reality transposition of Resident Evil 4, as well as having worked on Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Sanzaru Games perhaps represents the most significant loss in terms of production continuity, being the author of the popular Asgard’s Wrath saga and having linked its name to historical franchises such as Sly Cooper on behalf of Sony in the past. Twisted Pixel, acquired together with Armature in October 2022, was instead famous for cult titles of the Xbox 360 era such as ‘Splosion Man.

Meta’s strategy now seems to aim for a different technological priority, progressively moving away from the initial ambitions linked to the metaverse. A company spokesperson has in fact clarified that the disinvestment in the gaming sector is functional to strengthening the Wearables division. The resources previously allocated to the development of VR content will be reinvested to support growth and research in the field of wearable devices, confirming the group’s desire to redefine its industrial objectives for the current year.
