Study: Paracetamol is safe during pregnancy, despite Trump’s claims

Scientists analyzed 43 robust studies covering hundreds of thousands of cases and found no link between taking the drug and the risk of developing autism, ADHD or other disorders in children. Particular attention was paid to comparisons between siblings, which allowed us to exclude the influence of genetic factors and family environment.

Lead author of the study, Professor Asma Khalil, stressed that the conclusion is clear: paracetamol remains a safe option if medical advice is followed. Current protocols specifically prescribe its use for pain and fever relief in expectant mothers. Refusal of such treatment, on the contrary, can lead to serious complications, including the risk of miscarriage and premature birth.

This publication puts an end to the discussion that escalated last September after the harsh statements of Donald Trump. At the time, the US president claimed his administration was linking paracetamol use to autism and urged pregnant women to “fight like hell” to avoid the drug. These words drew harsh criticism from the global medical community due to the lack of scientific evidence.

Experts note that the new study in The Lancet meets the highest quality standards and completely refutes the concerns voiced by politicians. Doctors hope that these data will help reassure women and prevent dangerous refusals of necessary therapy during pregnancy.
