He was 93 years old. The funeral will take place on Wednesday and Thursday. The funeral is planned for Friday at 11 a.m. in Rome.

Valentino was considered one of the world’s most important designers of haute couture. For decades his clothes were worn by Hollywood stars such as Elisabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Julia Roberts, but also by Lady Diana and Jackie Kennedy. The last empress of Iran, Farah Diba, fled the country after the Islamic revolution wearing a Valentino coat.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X that Valentino was “the undisputed master of style and elegance and the eternal symbol of Italian haute couture.” Italy is losing a legend, “but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Thank you for everything,” continued Meloni.

Valentino, who was born in May 1932 in Voghera, south of Milan, opened his own fashion house with his partner Giammetti in 1960 – and turned it into a top international address within just a few years. Valentino was considered one of the ambassadors of Italian fashion, but he also had close ties to France: in 2006 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. At the beginning of 2008 he retired from the fashion business.
