The ‘Hispanics’ qualify for the Main Round of the European Championship with the defeat of Serbia

The Spanish men’s handball team has qualified for the Main Round of the European Handball Championship, which is being held in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, after Austria beat Serbia this Monday (26-25) on the third day of the first phase, giving the pass to the ‘Hispanics’ no matter what they do against Germany.

Jordi Ribera’s men, who in the first two days beat both the Balkans (27-29) and the Central Europeans (25-30), would be in the next round mathematically and without playing if Iker Romero’s Austria, bottom of Group A after losing their first two games, surprised the Serbian team. And so it happened.

Serbia dominated by the minimum at half-time (12-13), but Austria, led by pivot Tobias Wagner -6 goals-, managed to turn the match around and even flirted with the possibility of advancing to the ‘Main Round’, which involved winning by at least four goals difference and Spain beating Germany.

Now, the ‘Hispanics’ will play against the German team for the points they will carry to the Main Round, where the tickets for the qualifying rounds will be at stake.
