Glavak seeks salvation for radio: This most reliable media must not become a hidden option in cars

MEP SunĨana Glavak sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, calling for clear protective measures to be included in the upcoming Digital Networks Act (DNA) for the protection of radios in new, connected vehicles, the MEP’s office announced on Monday.

As cars increasingly turn into digital platforms, the availability of radios on central screens and interfaces can no longer be taken for granted, the press release notes. The letter warns that, without clear rules, global technology platforms and car manufacturers could become intermediaries in access to audio content, which could have consequences for media pluralism, consumer choice and public safety.

“Radio is still the most reliable medium in Europe and in crisis situations, it often remains the only channel that provides citizens with timely information and instructions, especially when there is a power outage or power outage. In the digital age, radio must not become a hidden option, but must remain visible and accessible to everyone, as before,” Glavak said.

In the letter, the European Commission is urged to include provisions in the DNA proposal that would ensure the mandatory installation of radio receivers in all new vehicles placed on the EU market, guarantee easy finding and availability of licensed radio services through the vehicle interface, and ensure equal conditions for radio in relation to global audio platforms.

The Act on Digital Networks is one of the key legislative proposals of the European Commission for strengthening the European digital infrastructure and competitiveness, with an emphasis on investments, resilience and modernization of the telecommunications framework. The official presentation of the proposal of the Act is scheduled for January 21, 2026 at the plenary session in Strasbourg.

The letter, on the initiative of Glavak, was co-signed by representatives from EPP, Renew, S&D and the Greens, and the name additionally emphasizes the broad political support for the protection of radio as a reliable medium and security channel in the new era of digital mobility, the press release states.
