A series of videos created by AI, simulating life in the 1970s, makes many people over 50 years old excited and excited when watching.
“It’s 2025, what are you doing?” asked a guy wearing a denim shirt, about 18 years old in the video. “Out there, everyone is glued to their phones, pursuing meaningless things,” a girl replied.
The video, posted by Maximal Nostalgia on Instagram, currently attracts more than 616,000 likes. This account currently has nearly a million followers, mainly posting AI-generated videos in the style of the 1970s and 1980s. More than 10 posted videos exceeded 200,000 likes.

These short videos are spreading on X, Instagram, Facebook, becoming part of a new type of AI content called “boomerslop”, or “outdated lifestyle”.
Theo Business Insider“boomerslop” is a type of “AI slop” that is especially attractive to people of the Baby Boomer generation, or “young seniors” – the group born during the baby boom after World War II, especially the period 1955-1960. “Boomerslop” videos are often not created by the Baby Boomer generation but carry the “spirit” and aesthetic of this generation, and can even fool older people into believing it is real.
Recently, many people have been concerned about the impact of smartphone and computer screens on teenagers and children. However, the older generation is also becoming “addicted” to screens. Ofcom data released in December 2025 shows that teenagers are still the most addicted to their phones, but people over 65 spend an average of 3 hours and 20 minutes a day on electronic devices, a sharp increase from 2 hours and 46 minutes three years earlier. People aged 55 to 65 also spend four hours online every day, up from 3 hours 23 minutes by 2023.
Citing expert opinions, Telegraph said Internet users of all ages are targets of low-quality AI content, called by words like “slop”, “brainrot”, “boomerslop”. Videos and images of this type are often meaningless, without content, only intended to please or amuse the user: a kitten is cooking, a puppy is cuddling chicks. The proliferation of meaningless, thoughtless content raises concerns that the Internet is becoming less intelligent, and users may be dragged down with it.

Older Internet users also cannot resist the appeal of “boomerslop” content. Facebook and YouTube are flooded with low-quality “AI garbage”, one reason is said to be that the users of these two platforms are of an older generation than TikTok and Threads. A December 2025 study estimated that 20% of videos shown to YouTube users are low-quality AI.
“For children and teenagers, the worry is about screen time. For older people, the question of excessive screen use is hardly mentioned,” Lucija Smid, a PhD student at the University of Bristol and studying the risk of fraud for older people, told Telegraph.
Theo Guardianthere has long been concern about the digital divide between young and old when it comes to using new technology. However, this worry was only true 10-20 years ago. Currently, many people born between 1946 and 1975, from 50 to 80 years old, are quite good at using technology. For example, statistics from Age UK August 2025 shows that about 67% of people over 65 years old and 88% of people over 55 years old in the UK now own a smartphone.
Therefore, older people may face the same risks as younger Internet users. A study from China last year showed that poor sleep quality is a common problem in older people with screen “addiction”. They also face the risk of technology-related fraud and payment fraud.
More seriously, there have been reports of health damage caused by AI. Last year, a 76-year-old man in New York died from a fall after trying to “meet” a character in the Meta AI chatbot. The UK Office for National Statistics’ 2023 survey shows that 55% of people aged 70 and over have difficulty recognizing AI content.
However, access to AI also gives older people freedom. “If you don’t use the Internet, it will be difficult for you to participate in social life. The same goes for the elderly,” said Age UK policy expert Nadine Kennedy. “So it’s good that more and more older people are using technology and integrating it into their daily lives.”
In addition, AI chatbots are also considered a potential solution to the problem of loneliness in the elderly, and can even suggest daily tasks that the elderly often have difficulty with. According to research from the University of Texas last year, phones and computers “can stimulate the brain, facilitate social connection, and compensate for cognitive ability decline with age.”
