Plenković in Davos: Dialogue must replace ‘more problems than solutions’ regarding Greenland

The Prime Minister is participating in the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alpine city, which was attended by the American President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

The US president arrives at the summit at the height of tensions between the two sides of the Atlantic, after announcing over the weekend tariffs on European countries that stood by Copenhagen over its annexation of the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland.

“I think it is important here that dialogue sometimes replaces a few more words in this fast international communication, which sometimes brings more problems than solutions”, said Plenković in a statement to journalists.

Denmark’s issues concern its allies in NATO and all members of the European Union, so they must “position themselves, but also lead a reasonable policy” towards the USA as a transatlantic partner, the prime minister continued.

EU members will discuss this topic at the meeting of the European Council on Thursday, which will have one topic – relations between the USA and the EU.

Nappiesć stressed that Croatia’s position is clear – solidarity with Denmark and a reasonable solution through dialogue with the USA.

He welcomed Trump’s arrival in Switzerland where he will “explain his initiative – the Peace Committee”.

The American president will sign the body’s charter on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. on the sidelines of the meeting in Davos, which he will address on Wednesday.

Nappiesć said that it is still too early to know whether Croatia will join the committee because the word about the document that needs to be studied and consulted.

“In order to sign the document, one must go through certain procedures, it cannot be done like this, from day to day,” said the prime minister, but added that Croatia is always ready to support all initiatives that lead to peace.

The Peace Committee was originally designed as a body that would oversee the implementation of the cease-fire in Gaza based on a United Nations resolution, but the world media writes that Trump envisioned it as a longer-term alternative to the organization that he has been criticizing for years.

According to the information known so far, about fifty countries have been invited to Trump’s committee, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Belarusian Alexander Lukashenko and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, as well as Croatia and the European Commission, were invited.
