New train tragedy in Spain: Train driver dead, 20 injured near Barcelona

According to emergency services, the train driver was killed, 20 people were injured, four of whom are in a critical condition. Numerous emergency teams, firefighters and police were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident, and traffic on that section of the railway was stopped.

The train on its way from Malaga to Madrid was traveling at a speed of 205 kilometers per hour when its last three carriages derailed and crossed onto the adjacent track. At that moment, another train from Madrid came from the opposite direction at a speed of 210 kilometers per hour.

The collision near the town of Adamuz occurred on a flat area, and both trains were traveling at less than the permitted 250 kilometers per hour. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

It is the worst railway accident in Spain after 2013, when a train went off in a curve near the northern city of Santiago Compostela. At that time, 80 people died, and 145 were injured.
