The city of Deinze launched the Open Library in Landegem on October 7, 2024. Registered users have since been given independent access to the library, including in the evenings and at weekends. After a year and three months, the city takes stock: in 64 weeks there were 8,854 registrations.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the most popular times. In addition, the library attracts many visitors on Mondays in the late afternoon and Wednesdays around noon, just before opening time. It remains quieter before 9 am, but visits after 7 pm are clearly on the rise.
Freedom
Alderman for Culture Jan Vermeulen (CD&V) sees the threshold lowering. “The Open Library gives people freedom. You come when it fits into your day. That also translates into strong figures.”
In Landegem, lending figures rose sharply. 2018 was the top year for a long time with 93,621 loans. At the end of 2024 the counter stood at 88,411, but at the end of 2025 the library ended up with 100,138 loans, an increase of more than 13 percent.
