Trump in Davos: “Do you want to hear something from me about Greenland?”

The world’s largest island is a “largely uninhabited pile of ice” that “can hardly be called a country.” Of course, Greenland would be home to large deposits of rare earths, but to get to these raw materials you would have to break through thick layers of ice.

“That’s not why we need Greenland,” Trump said. “We need it for our own strategic security and the protection of international security.” Greenland is a huge, “largely unprotected land area”, geographically part of North America and therefore the Western Hemisphere.

“This is our territory,” Trump reiterates his administration’s worldview, according to which the United States must exert its influence by all means possible over all areas that it considers to be part of the world.
