Danish troops ready to fight in case of US attack

Troops sent by Denmark to Greenland have been ordered to be on operational alert in case of a US attack on the autonomous territory. The Danish public broadcaster Dr reported this, citing classified military documents. According to the TV station, an order issued last week stipulates that soldiers deployed on the Arctic island must be equipped with real ammunition. The document also outlines an operation divided into several phases, providing, if necessary, for the subsequent dispatch of further troops and military assets.

In the days following the order, civilian and military aircraft began transporting personnel and equipment to Greenland. The deployment was officially included in the Danish-led military exercise ‘Arctic Endurance’, which Copenhagen said will continue “for much of next year”.

The revelation comes after US President Donald Trump toned down his previous threats to take control of Greenland by force. After a meeting on Wednesday with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said he had reached an agreement in principle on the island, without providing details.
