Musetti n.3 in the world, second Italian on the podium

It’s just a virtual score, just a list that couldn’t be more precarious and unreliable. But it’s always a satisfaction: the ‘live’ ATP ranking sees two Italians on the podium. In addition to Jannik Sinner, destined however the Australian slam ends up to remain on second step behind Carlos Alcaraz Lorenzo Musetti appears in third place.

The Carrarino, 23 years old, currently surpasses the n.4 of the world, Novak Djokovic is n.3 (who drops to fifth place), Alexander Zverev. It’s just a game linked to the ATP’s counting methods, but it’s quite impressive to see for the first time in history two Italians among the top three in the world.

Because Musetti is virtually no.3 in the world

The reason for Musetti’s high jump, that is arrived at the Australian Open as world no.5is explained with the mechanism of the ATP ranking. Every time a tournament starts, the points earned in that competition the previous year are deducted. And so it happens that Zverev and Djokovic at the time of forgiveness a large amount of points: being just in the second round, they gain a handful compared to the 1200 and 700 which they conquered in 2025 reaching the final and semi-final respectively.

But in 2025, despite never having won, he reached the final four times (all defeats in addition to the two in 2024 and the one in Hong Kong this year) and, above all, he reached the semifinal at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. In Melbourne, however, he stopped in the third round so this edition represents a good opportunity to collect quite a few points.

For Lorenzo Musetti, winner of theAustralian Open juniores nel 2019now there is the possibility of flying further and, if not actually being able to conquer a slam, at least to achieve the most prestigious position in the ranking that an Italian – Sinner aside – has ever achieved in the Open era.
