Augsburg becomes a Bayern horror: first defeat after 27 games

Defender Hiroki Ito gave Bayern the lead with his header in the 23rd minute in front of 75,000 spectators. In the final phase, however, Arthur Chaves (75th) and Han-Noah Massengo (81st) turned the game around. Michael Olise failed at the last second on the aluminum.

This FC Augsburg again and again

In April 2014, FC Augsburg ended Munich’s longest unbeaten streak after 53 Bundesliga games without defeat with a 1-0 win. Now FCA stopped FC Bayern in their second-longest streak after 27 unbeaten league games. After three points against Wolfsburg (8:1), Cologne (3:1), Leipzig (5:1) and Saint-Gilloise (2:0), it was Bayern’s first defeat of this football year.

FC Bayern quickly took control of the game. However, Augsburg didn’t make it particularly easy for them. Before kick-off, coach Manuel Baum didn’t want to talk about limiting the damage to his club, which was fighting to stay in the league, but rather called for courage from his team. And FC Augsburg showed this until the final whistle.

Davies is back from the start for the first time

Bayern combined, but the Swabians covered closely and tried to disrupt early. That worked quite well until Ito nodded in to take the lead after a corner from Michael Olise. The Japanese defender (for Raphaël Guerreiro) was one of four newcomers to the record champions alongside Jonas Urbig (Manuel Neuer), Leon Goretzka (Joshua Kimmich) and Alphonso Davies (Tom Bischof). Davies was even back in Munich’s starting line-up for the first time since he tore his cruciate ligament in March. But this time, unusually, as a right wing-back.

Cold Bayern shower after the change

Augsburg’s Luis Diaz was hard to catch on Bayern’s left side. A collision between the Colombian international and Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen (29th) in the penalty area and the goalkeeper’s minute-long break for treatment broke the rhythm of the home team around substitute captain Harry Kane. Robin Fellhauer (45th + 4) was just a touch short of equalizing when he shot against the crossbar immediately before the break. Urbig would have had no chance from around ten meters. Augsburg remained uncomfortable at the start of the second half. Bayern brought on Musiala for the faulty youngster Lennart Karl and Joshua Kimmich for Davies in the 61st minute. But the Augsburg team, who never gave up, surprisingly scored two hard hits. As in 2014, when the Swabians ended Munich’s record streak of unbeaten games, this time they were also celebrating after a long Bayern winning streak.
