Siri will become an AI chatbot on iOS 27

Theo MacrumorsApple plans to upgrade Siri twice this year, adding personalization features in iOS 26.4 before turning this personal virtual assistant into a full AI chatbot in iOS 27. This is considered an inevitable result after Google and Apple confirmed that Gemini would be integrated into Siri earlier this month.

With iOS 27, Apple will almost completely change the way Siri works. Currently, this virtual assistant can answer basic questions and complete simple tasks, but users cannot engage in back-and-forth conversations, get help with multi-step tasks or complex questions. The new version of Siri can do all of this and works similarly to popular chatbots like ChatGPT.

Sources said that Apple initially did not plan to introduce complete chatbots that users could interact with such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, but chatbots were so popular that the company could not ignore them. Simply adding AI to apps and features is not enough for Apple to remain competitive in the market. A new version of SiriBot will help Apple catch up with competitors and bring more competitiveness to iPhone and Mac products.

The new Siri is still activated in the old way such as voice commands, pressing the button on the side of the device. Siri can respond to both voice and text requests. There is currently no information about the interface of this new AI assistant, but experts believe that Apple needs many changes to compete in functionality with companies like OpenAI, Google or Anthropic.

Users are now accustomed to opening an AI app with a full text interface, including chat history, while Siri has a more minimalist interface. In case you want to retrieve conversation history, Siri chatbot needs improvements, additions and full screen display.

Some of the first applications that will be deeply integrated with the new Siri are key Apple applications such as Mail, Messages, Apple TV, Xcode and Photos. Siri will have the ability to search for specific images, edit photos, assist with programming, make suggestions about TV shows and movies, and send emails.

Before the comprehensive upgrade on iOS 27, the Siri version on iOS 26.4 also had major changes such as being updated based on the LLM large language model. Apple worked on this when adding Apple Intelligence to iOS 18, but progress was not as expected because Siri’s underlying architecture needed an overhaul to run LLMs.

From iOS 26.4, Siri will be able to chat continuously, giving human-like responses to questions, more personalized to the user, based on Gemini. However, features similar to AI chatbots need to wait until iOS version 27. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s custom model will be equivalent to Google’s Gemini 3.

Theo Macrumors, Apple and Google are also discussing running the Siri chatbot on Google servers equipped with Tensor Processing Units. This may be because Apple does not have enough infrastructure to handle chatbot queries from billions of active devices every day.
